If you’re spending most of your time on social media – in self-quarantine – you know that Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 medical thriller Contagion is rapidly climbing Twitter trends. No points for guessing, it is because of the novel coronavirus scare.
Movie buffs who’ve already watched the masterpiece were quick to point out that the hysteria and confusion surrounding the spread of Covid-19 across the globe, is very similar to what Steven Soderbergh had shown in 2011. And the similarities are actually rather uncanny – a mysterious virus that originated in China, that spreads rapidly across countries with several nations competing to develop a vaccine until the disease is finally declared a pandemic, but not before killing millions of people.
Contagion minted $207 million at the box office in 2011. But in 2020, this new-found popularity is making it trend on OTT platforms as well. Those who hadn’t already watched the medical thriller have been frantically searching for the movie.
So if you’re wondering where you can watch this gem, login to Amazon Prime Videos right away. We must, however, warn you that it isn’t for the faint-hearted.
Contagion is currently available on Amazon Prime Videos.
Of course, we’ve added it to our watchlist.
The novel coronavirus has caused quite a panic around the world, and Bollywood and Hollywood aren’t immune to it either. Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson were the first global celebrities who tested positive for Covid-19. The duo shared the news with their fans on social media. Tom and Rita were in Australia, where the former was shooting for a film. They were immediately quarantined there, and as per the latest reports, they have been discharged and kept on home quarantine since they are out of danger.
Ukrainian-born actor-model and star of the Bond movie Quantum Of Solace, Olga Kurylenko, also shared on Instagram that she’s tested positive for the novel virus and has been in self-quarantine for a week. Reports of Frozen 2 actress Rachel Matthews and Game Of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju testing positive for Covid-19 were also shockers for fans of both these stars.
The next big blow was the news of Idris Elba testing positive. He shared a video message assuring his fans that he is doing well, and will continue to be in quarantine until full recovery.
Closer home, veteran actor Dilip Kumar tweeted last night that he’s been put in complete isolation or self-quarantine as a precautionary measure against the spread of Covid-19. Earlier today, singer Anup Jalota, who was in Europe for a concert, also revealed that he’s been quarantined in a hotel in suburban Mumbai after he landed in the Maximum City.
Bollywood is currently calling off several shoots and events, and postponing movie releases owing to the rising threat. Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi, earlier slated to release on March 27, has been pushed indefinitely. Following this, the release of Arjun Kapor and Parineeti Chopra’s Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar has also been pushed. Irrfan’s Angrezi Medium, which released on March 13, will be re-released on March 31 once the theatres reopen.
In addition, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji and few other big banners have stopped all production work, urging all their staff to stay put.
On that note, we’re going to stay put and watch Contagion. Who’s in?
